Zella May Lambert Sumpter, 74, of Big Ugly, formerly of Whitman, WV, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Boone Memorial Hospital at Madison, WV, with her daughter Tresa by her side.

She was born January 7, 1950, at Logan, WV, to the late William “Bill” and Marjorie Trent Lambert.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John and Matilda Lambert; her maternal grandparents, Sydney and Evelen Lambert; and one sister, Betty Lou Lambert Bronz.

Zella was a coal miner at Belva Coal Company, and she was also a teacher at Pride Community Services. She loved to travel, and her favorite places to eat were Janet’s Park N’ Eat and NuEra Bakery. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They each held a special place in her heart.

Those left to cherish her memory are three children, Tammy Sumpter Farley of St. Albans, WV, Tresa (Michael Williamson) Sumpter of Madison, WV, and William “Spoon” Sumpter of Whitman, WV; 11 grandchildren, Krysti Sumpter Murphy of Madison, WV, Destany (Kevin) Cooper of North Carolina, Matthew (Hannah) Sumpter of Charleston, WV, Chase (Bethany) Queen of Colorado, Angel (Blake) Spaulding of Kermit, WV, Keith “Lil Man” Sumpter of Charleston, WV, Caleb, Taylor, Skylar, Faroh, and Jordan Turner all of Madison, WV; 13 great-grandchildren, Kylan and Addline of Turtle Creek, WV, Eli of North Carolina, Sophia and Ellowen of Colorado, Gunner, Jase, Nova, Zayley, and Winry all of Kermit, WV, Adelain and McKenna of Alum Creek, WV, and Marcus of Charleston, WV; and one sister, Joseline Lamber Curry of Holden, WV. Additionally, Zella leaves behind a host of extended family and friends.

Per Zella’s last wishes, her remains will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at her daughter Tresa’s residence at 235 Oakwood Drive, Madison, WV 25301.

The family would like to thank all those who called, texted, and brought food, and a special thanks to all the doctors and nurses at Boone Memorial Hospital for their exceptional and professional care.
