Veda Charlotte Crum Obituary

Veda Charlotte Crum, 94, of Garrett Fork, started her teaching career in Heaven on April 7, 2024. After 38 years of teaching here on Earth, that was just practice for her preparation of eternal teaching. Many of us were blessed to have had Mrs. Crum as a teacher. She brightened many lives and touched the hearts of many. Countless people talk about how Mrs. Crum was their favorite teacher. It all started and commenced on Garrett Fork from a one room schoolhouse to fourth grade at East Chapmanville Grade School to Streets of Gold.

Veda married Thomas Crum on March 16, 1950. He always laughed and said it wasn’t legal even though in less than 24 hours later, he would turn 21. Veda and Thomas loved Daytona Beach. They were beach bums who loved seafood and walking hand in hand on the surf. If you ever wanted to find them in April and November, their residence was Daytona. Until their mid-80s, they were still lounging in the sun. Then, Thomas introduced Veda to the Amish Country. The food and buggies won them over. Their lives were always together. They had the retirement most dream of and few achieve.

Veda was born August 25, 1929, to the late Charles and Lottie Garrett. She was the eldest sister to Franklin, Raymond, Ronald, and Michael Garrett, and Mary Lucas, who have all preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and five siblings, Veda had a son-in-law, Randall Bias, who also preceded her in death and was her world. He was her handyman, Mr. Fix It, and most importantly, the best husband for her only daughter. Randy and Veda may have had a spat from time to time, but they loved each other just as much.

Veda leaves behind a daughter, Debbie Bias of Garrett Fork. For the last 2 ½ years, Debbie moved in with Veda to give her 24/7 care and was blessed to do so. Veda had one granddaughter who she loved to spoil, Radeana (Michael) Dotson of Danville, WV. Granny and Pappy would take her on trips around West Virginia, to the beach, to the Amish Country, and many more just to get to spend time with her. Veda also had two grandsons, Breyer (Chelsea) Dotson of Louisville, KY, and Tucker Dotson of Danville, WV. Tucker enjoyed spending many days with Granny. She also had a great-granddaughter, Olive Dotson of Louisville, KY.

In addition to her daughter and grandchildren, Veda is survived by one sister, Sandy Gunther and one sister-in-law, Linda Garrett. The nieces and nephews are many, and she loved each one.

She looked so forward to seeing ATVs drive through her yard and little hands waving, each one was so special.

Veda was a member of the Manila Church of Christ. Our church family has been there to help through this journey.

There have been several people who truly were there for us no matter the request. From helping pick Granny up when she fell, to mowing grass and fixing the lawn mower, bringing food, especially sweets which Granny loved, to phone calls and lastly but not least, prayers for comfort and peace. All of you will hold a special place in our hearts forever.

A couple special people entered Granny’s life and helped her when her health deteriorated. Robin Mutters and Debbie Adkins were there to help. We are blessed and thankful for them both.

A celebration of Veda’s life and multi-year fourth grade reunion will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Evans Funeral Home at Chapmanville, WV.
