Sonja Thomas Obituary

Sonja Lee (Stamper) Thomas went to live in her heavenly home at eighty two years of age, on August 8, 2022, surrounded by her husband and family in Thomasville, NC. She put up a 5+ year fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Sonja was born on September 4, 1939, to Helen (Truly) Stamper {deceased} & Haskell Kenneth Stamper {deceased} in Stirrat, West Virginia.

She met and later married Thomas Lee Thomas on December 8, 1957. She had six siblings. Phyllis Katz of Elyria, OH, Garrett Stamper Sr.{deceased} (Dottie) of Woodbridge, VA, George Stamper (Marsha) of Bluefield, West Virginia, Debbie Evans (Paul) of Omar, West Virginia, and David Stamper{deceased} (Delana {deceased}) of Monitor.

Sonja was 1957 Logan High School Alumni. She was a loving wife and mother to her husband, Thomas, and their three children, Toni Lynn Thomas of Thomasville, NC; Tina Louise McKinney (David) of Thomasville, NC; And Thomas Lee Thomas II (Louise) of Thomasville, NC. As well as seven grandchildren; Alex Wray, Sean Kilby, Savannah McKinney-Billings (Hunter), Cade McKinney, Mitchell Thomas, Francis Thomas{deceased}, and Lauren Thomas. In addition to her four great grandchildren, Alena Wray, Katelynn Wray, Sydney Wray, and Sophie Billings.

Sonja was active in her community as a cherished church member. She attended West Logan Baptist Church of Logan, West Virginia. She was phenomenal baker who constantly made homemade cookies and candies for all of her friends and family members.  She was always there for all of her family and friends to help out when they were in need.

She enjoyed crafting, making wooden cutouts and painting them perfectly. Her favorite color was red, all the way down to her signature perfume; Red Door. She loved Jesus Christ, and until her last breath on earth praised his name through hymns.  She loved spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

She was the patriarch of her family, always hosting dinners, holiday events, and reunions.

She had a plentiful bounty of talents and skills. And where she lacked the knowledge to complete a task she would learn, practice, become a professional, then teach others.

She would always say “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it”. In regards to her own talents. She taught her grandchildren this as well, to utilize their resources to become better at whatever task they’re attempting. And to not give up, ever. She also taught them to live, learn, and love more each day. At the end of the day, love was all she stood for. To love Jesus, love one another, and to strive to love your day to day life. In her final days, she spent great time with her great granddaughter Sophie, because as Sophie’s mind was growing, Sonja’s was drifting away. They had a special bond.

Her family will receive friends at Evans Funeral Home in Chapmanville, West Virginia, on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and her service will be directly afterwards, beginning at 1:00 pm with Rev. Tim Willis officiating, followed by her burial at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby, WV.

At 4:30 pm, there will be a meal for family and friends at Omar Community Center at Cow Creek.

Sonja will be laid to rest beside her mother, father, and brother at Highland Memory Gardens.
