Sgt. Thomas W. Mulcahy, 43, of Bruno, WV, departed this life on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Logan Regional Medical Center at Logan, WV.
He was born December 11, 1981, at Roanoke, VA, a son of Thomas Oliver Mulcahy and Eula Jenny Hall.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Jenny Hall; his step-father, Ken Brewer; one sister, Lindsey Carson; his grandmother, Carla Haskins; and his mother-in-law, Catherine “Cat” Walker.
Tom’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to service, a passion for helping others, and a profound dedication to his country. His 13-year tenure with the Army National Guard as a U.S. Cavalry Scout was a testament to his bravery and patriotism. Tom served his country with valor during Operation Iraqi Freedom, demonstrating remarkable courage in two tours of duty from 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. His exceptional service was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Combat Action Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, G.W.O.T. Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Medal with M Device, Rifle Marksmanship Badge with Expert Device, and Mechanic and Driver Badge with W Device. Tom's military career began with his graduation from basic training at Fort Knox, KY, laying the foundation for his steadfast commitment to his nation.
Tom's dedication to serving others extended far beyond his military service. He was a proud and active community member of the Logan County Prevention Coalition, where he worked tirelessly to foster a safe and supportive environment for all residents. His altruism shone brightly through his five years as a volunteer firefighter with the Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department, where his bravery and selflessness were on full display as he protected his community from harm. Beyond his service roles, Tom found joy in music, often playing the guitar and singing with a warmth that drew people together. His love for music was one of the many ways he connected with those around him. His personality and sense of humor also attributed to his friendships. Tom’s passion for service was evident in every aspect of his life as highlighted through his military service, his fire service, and his involvement with the LCPC. Above all, Tom treasured his role as a father and husband. His greatest joy was found in the laughter and love of his family.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sharon “Susie” Mulcahy; his children, Braelyn Mulcahy and Jace Moorhead at home, Dean Moorhead of Virginia, Ryan Moorhead of Huntington, WV, Johnathan (Kendra) Moorhead of Bruno, WV, and Morgan “Bubba” (Heaven) Shepherd of Logan, WV; his grandchildren, Kylen Shepherd and a baby girl on the way; his biological father, Thomas Windling of Ohio; one sister, Amber (Zac) Sumpter of Fort Gay, WV; one brother, Matthew Frederick of Tazwell, VA; one niece, Brylin Marsh of West Carrollton, OH; two nephews, Ryder Webb of Fort Gay, WV, and Noah Carson of West Carrollton, OH; his father-in-law, James “PK” Walker of Bruno, WV; special friends including all of his 150th brothers and sisters with whom he served, his brothers and sisters at the Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department, especially his little buddy, Grayson Hunter, and Rebecca Benavidez. Additionally, Tom leaves behind many aunts, uncles, and cousins, along with a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Sandlick Freewill Baptist Church at Bruno, WV, with Pastor Daryl Densford, Pastor Bill Cantrell, and Pastor Roger Frye officiating.
Military Honors will be conducted following the services by the VFW Chapter #6153, American Legion Chapter #103 of Chapmanville, and DAV Chapter #39 of Harts.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2025, and two hours prior to services Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Sandlick Freewill Baptist Church at Bruno, WV.
To honor Tom's wishes, he will be cremated following the services.
