Paul G. "Bud" Bell, Sr. Obituary

Paul G. “Bud” Bell, Sr., received his heavenly reward and is reunited at last with his wife, Joyce Ann (Elkins) Bell. Born March 9, 1932, to the late Valentine “Tine” and Thelma (Mitchell) Bell, he grew up in Jeffrey, WV and resided much of his life in Chapmanville, WV. Bud and Joyce also had a home in Streetsboro, Ohio for many years. He was a graduate of Streetsboro High School Class of 2005, where he graduated alongside his granddaughters, June and Ariane.

An Army veteran, Dad served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954, earning the rank of Sargent. He worked in the construction industry in Ohio during its boom and returned home to WV with his family to begin his career in the coal mines in the late 1970s, eventually retiring from the mines. Even with an often-challenging job in the mines working late and early shifts, Dad found time to be a lifelong handyman and builder. He loved working with his hands either to build picture frames, tables, or other furniture. Dad also loved to be outside in the sun, working hard in the garden, on top of roofs, or around the yard. Later in life, he found peace in sitting on the porch watching as others went about their days, looking for pictures in the clouds, or taking in the warmth of the sun.

Dad was faithful and loved the Lord with all his heart. He attended church at Crooked Creek Church of Christ and always found a role to play for each service whether that was greeting people, saying prayer, helping with communion or bringing laughter each year as he found new and funny ways to put his birthday money in the donation bowl. Dad was a jokester and loved to be the center of attention. His smile made him even more handsome if you can believe it. For many years, you could find Dad and his brother, Bobby, passing out flyers for revivals. They were a dynamic duo.

Dad leaves his five children to honor his memory – November (John, Jr.) Dolovacky of Stow, Ohio; Glenda (Thomas) Seese of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; Teresa (Duane) Papesh of Bedford, Ohio; Paul, Jr. (Janice) of Streetsboro, Ohio; and Tonia (Daniel) Ferrell of Twinsburg, Ohio. He was Papaw Bell to 11 grandchildren – April (Chet Mistur) Dolovacky, June (Michael) Hopkins, John, III (Jackie Fausnight) Dolovacky and Kyle (Katlin) Dolovacky; Ariane Lanzdorf, Matthew (Elizabeth) Lanzdorf and Alexander (Brandi Sustaric) Lanzdorf; and Paul Bell, III (Alexandria), Ryan Bell, Nathan Bell and Erin Bell. He was Great Papaw Bell to Ethan Levi; Rayland Alan, Ellamay Sage, Annmarie Lyn, Scarlet Rose and William Ford; Catie Lyne, Chloe Ann, Cayla Michelle, Charlotte Rose, Jerry Daniel and Chandler James; Blake Matthew and Allison Grace; and Julie May and Emily Joy.

He is survived by his sisters – Barbara Green and Mary Jane McNeely of Orangeburg, South Carolina; Molly (Marvin) Deck of Jeffrey, West Virginia; and Shirley Varney of West Salem, Ohio. Dad also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Bud along with a host of extending family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Dad was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Scott, Don, Delbert (Ding), Juanita, Willard, Marie, Edward, Jim, Carol and Bobby.

No words can express our love and gratitude to Paul and Janice for taking such good care of Dad and allowing him to be at home in his final days. Dad had 3 companions who guarded over him and provided entertainment and comfort – Shadow, Oreo, and Keno.
