Leila Gay Damron, 87, of Justice Addition, formerly of Verdunville, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Gay was born on January 4, 1936, at Russell County, VA, the daughter of the late Doc and Hersey Williams.
She was a devoted Christian and a longtime member of the Maryetta United Baptist Church, where she enjoyed spending time with the ladies circle and was named Mother of the Year in 2010. Gay loved to cook, and she wouldn’t dream of showing up to a family or church function without her famous potato salad. In her former years, Gay was married to the now late Ronald Damron of Dingess, WV, and although they parted ways many years ago, she formed a special bond of love with the Damron family which would last a lifetime.
Before retiring as a state employee, Gay worked at Southern West Virginia Technical and Community College where she also earned two associate degrees. An avid viewer of Wheel of Fortune, Gay enjoyed game shows such as Cash Cab and Family Feud, along with crossword puzzles and word searches.
Her laugh was unmistakable. She and her grandson, Josh, enjoyed watching the outrageous antics of Tyler Perry’s “Madea” together, and although getting her to smile for a photo wasn’t easy, she’d grin from ear to ear during those Madea movies.
In her golden years, Gay spent much of her time sewing, and on any given evening, she could be found sitting in her “grand prize” recliner, needle in hand, watching a Lifetime movie on TV and lovingly stitching together another quilt for her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Beatrice Nelson, Peggy Elkins, Maglene Williams, and Shelby Baisden; and brothers, Guy Williams, F. “Bo” Williams, Robert Williams, Carson Williams, Paul Williams, and Forrest Williams.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Glenda “Susie” Brown and son-in-law, Charles E. “Charlie” Brown of Justice Addition; one grandson, Josh York; step-grandchildren, Chase (Kali) Brown and Amy Brown Lewis, and their children, Gay’s great-step-grandchildren, Jacob, Annalee, Conner, and Chance; sisters, Ann Starr and Brenda (Curt) Salyers both of Verdunville, WV; one brother, Tommy Williams of Dalton, GA. Additionally, Gay also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews along with a host of other dear relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Maryetta United Baptist Church at Verdunville, WV, with Pastor Lonnie Gore, Jr., and Rev. Barney Goins officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby, WV. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Evans Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Chapmanville, WV.
