Larry Zane Adkins Obituary

Larry Zane Adkins, 80, of Sand Creek, WV, departed this life on Friday, March 6, 2026.

He was born May 14, 1945, in Harts, WV, the son of the late Rinda Adkins and Samuel and Edith Gore Adkins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Ann Adkins; his second wife, Margie Mae Adkins; three brothers, Samuel Adkins, Jr., David Adkins, and Randall Adkins; and one sister, Phyllis Lambert.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, where he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, Larry was a proud American who carried the spirit of service through every aspect of his life. His commitment to his country was matched by his commitment to his fellow veterans, as demonstrated by his active membership in the VFW, American Legion, and Disabled Veterans. After returning from Vietnam, he continued serving his community, becoming the superintendent of Lincoln County Department of Highways, a position through which he tirelessly worked to better the infrastructure of his beloved home county.

His unwavering dedication to Lincoln County extended into numerous aspects of public service. As a past Chairman of the South Western Community Action Council, and a devoted servant on the Board of Directors of The Lincoln County Opportunity Company and The Harts Clinic, Larry was instrumental in spearheading initiatives that improved the welfare and health of his fellow Lincoln Countians. A former member of UMWA, Larry's legacy was also deeply rooted in the soil of his home, where he worked as a coal miner until he became disabled. He served as Lincoln County Clerk for 16 years before his retirement.

Larry was also an integral member of the Harts Volunteer Fire Department & Emergency Services. His courage and volunteerism were examples to all, as he continuously put the needs of others above his own, offering both protection and compassion to his neighbors in their times of need. Larry's life was one of profound service—a testament to the strength, love, and vigor with which he approached every task and every challenge. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all those fortunate enough to have known him and been touched by his generous heart and unwavering courage.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Ronald (Georgianna) Adkins, Kimberly Adkins, Hillary Adkins, and Roger (Sherry) Adams; his grandchildren, Trenton Toppins, Abigail Adkins, Savannah Adkins, Jayce Richards, Harper Adkins; his great-grandchildren, Stevie Toppins, Harleie Morrison, and Baylor Zane Baker; and one brother, Reginald Adkins. He also leaves behind special cousins, friends, and family including Gary Chapman and Phillip Lee Adkins. Additionally, Larry leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of extended family and friends.
