Larry Edward Stratton Obituary

Larry Edward Stratton, 73, of Big Ugly, WV, died peacefully at his home on October 15, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on September 13, 1949, at Green Shoals, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence and Freda Brumfield Stratton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Charlie and Betty Paris; and two great-nephews, Ryan and Wade Mullins.

He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 48 years, Joyce Stratton; his sister, Glenda Conn; brothers, David (Sandy) Stratton and Gregory Stratton; brother-in-law, Eddie (Geneva) Paris; sisters-in-law, Judy (David) Lucas and Elaine (Randall) Kirk; nephews and nieces whom he treated as if they were his own children, Jody Ferrell, Erica Kirk, Alicia (Ben) Stafford, Joseph Paris, Emma Manns, Karrie Hogue, Bekah Crouch, Benjamin Stratton, Jonathan Wellman, and Michael Wellman; great-nephews and great-nieces, Shade White, Gavin Overcash, Shaelynn Fraker, and Matthew Manns; his loyal pets, Kate and Tom; special friend and family physician, Dr. Linda Kessinger.

Larry was a retired teacher and principal of Lincoln County Schools for 35 years. He impacted so many students and colleagues during his career. Once retired, he worked for the WVU extension office. Larry loved spending time outdoors. You could often find him running his backhoe and Army truck, making improvements up and down his hollow, on top of his mountain, and sitting on his porch watching birds. He also enjoyed gardening and taking trips to William River with Joyce to trout fish. He was a man with an overwhelming and uniquely kind soul. Everyone who met Larry had nothing but admirable things to say about him. He never though twice about lending his talents in carpentry, mechanic work, welding, or anything that was needed for his family and friends. He will be immensely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Larry was a member of Leet Church of Christ. “A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of one’s death is better than the day of his birth.” Ecclesiastes 7:1

Joyce would like to thank the staff at Edwards Cancer Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital for the great care he received beginning in 2006, especially Dr. Maria Tirona, Dr. Tony Pacioles, and nurses, Penny and Dana. Also a special thanks to Elaine, Judy, Jody, Alicia, Erica, and Ben for the care he received during his final days and hours preceding his death. In addition, a special thanks to Dignity Hospice of Chapmanville, WV.

Per Larry’s request, his remains have been cremated, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date at the Oakview Family Cemetery at Big Ugly, WV.
