John P. Smith, Sr.

John P. Smith, Sr., “KI4RO”, 74, of Harts, WV, departed this life on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, WV.

He was born July 21, 1949, in Detroit, MI, a son of the late Paul Edward and Gloria Delores Lawrence Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarabeth Shelton; one sister, Diane Buzzel; one brother, Paul Smith, III; and his mother-in-law, Sarah Easterling.

John was a computer technician and he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jackie Smith; three sons, John Smith, Jr., of Oregon, Jason Smith of New York, and Zachary Shelton of Danville, WV; his grandchildren, Paul Smith of Oregon, Danny Shelton and Abby Shelton both of Harts, WV; three brothers, Jay (Jan) Smith, Dale Smith, and Michael (Kim) Smith; three sisters, Nancy Pennington, Alice Smith Essary, and Ruth Ann Hale; his father-in-law, Jack Easterling of Chapmanville, WV; his sister-in-law, Jennifer (Dwight) Preece of Chapmanville, WV; and one special niece, Tiara (Joshua) Ferrell of Williamson, WV. Additionally, John leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of extended family and friends.

At his request, there will be no services, and he will be laid to rest in the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery at Dunbar, WV, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make memorial contributions in honor of John to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Huntington Regional Office at 640 Fourth Ave., Huntington, WV 25701.
