John E. Smith, 72, of Chapmanville, WV, departed this life on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Logan Regional Medical Center at Logan, WV.
He was born October 20, 1951, at Logan, WV, a son of the late Bruce and Hazel Adams Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harv and Emma Adams and his paternal grandparents, Bruce and Irene Smith.
John was a pillar of the business community, known for his integrity and work ethic. For over 40 years, he was the owner and operator of Smith Mine Supply, a venture he embarked on with his brother Ronnie. His dedication to the industry was further exemplified by his active membership in the Coal Vendors Association, where his insights and contributions were highly valued.
Beyond his professional endeavors, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. A gifted restorer of classic cars, he brought new life to timeless machines with his skilled hands and keen eye for detail. He also had a love for the outdoors and four-wheeling. He cherished spending time with his family and his fur babies. John's infectious laughter and warm presence made every gathering memorable, and his love for life's adventures was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. His spirit and legacy lives on in the memories shared, the stories recounted, and the love he so freely gave.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 34 years, Olive Ruth Smith; one son, Joseph Brett Adkins of Philadelphia, PA; one daughter, Taylor Nicole "Nikki" Smith of Chapmanville, WV; one sister, Donna Merritt of Raleigh, NC; three brothers, William "Bill" Smith and Ronnie (Pam) Smith both of Chapmanville, WV, and Richard (Genny) Smith of Columbus, OH; his best feline companion, Finn; and two very special friends, Jim Winkler of Lake, WV, and Ron Wilson of Chapmanville, WV. Additionally, John leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Evans Funeral Home at Chapmanville, WV, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The family requests that you dress casually, as John always did. It is also encouraged that his buddies drive their “hot rods” to the visitation in honor of John and his love for classic cars.
Following the visitation, John will be cremated, per his wishes.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Evans Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Chapmanville, WV.
