Eugene Hensley, 84, of McConnell, WV, gained his wings on Thursday, March 27, 2025, leaving from HospiceCare at CAMC-Memorial Division at Charleston, WV.
He was born on August 27, 1940, at Verdunville, WV, the son of the late Noah and Weltha Workman Hensley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Zevia Simpkins, Myrtle Nelson, Enia Ray Hensley, Rex Earl Hensley, Alice Marie Hensley, and Clavis Hensley.
Eugene honorably served his country for 13 years in the United States Army, including two tours in Vietnam. His bravery and dedication during his military service were only the beginning of his contributions to his community and country. After returning home, he continued to serve by working at National Cable Repair in the coal mines, where his hard work and expertise were highly valued. A devout member of McConnell Tabernacle for over 50 years, Eugene's faith was a cornerstone of his life. His love for going to church was matched by his love for simple pleasures, such as enjoying a bowl of ice cream, bowling, and meticulously tending to his yard. Eugene's presence was a constant on his porch, where he could be found sitting with his coffee, engaging in thoughtful conversation, and keeping up with the nightly news. Eugene's fascination with watching trains was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his appreciation for the journey of life and the connections that bind us all. However, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with his wisdom and warmth.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Rosella Cole Hensley; children, Debra (Willie) Darby, Claus (Mo) Hensley, Eugene (Heike) Hensley Jr.; grandchildren, Gracie (Ethan) Gartin, Richard (Brandie) Darby, Jessica (Dennis) Orner, Dan (Jill) Hensley, Vivian Hensley, and Victoria Hensley; great-grandchildren, Aria Bryant, Marshall Bryant, and 7 additional great-grandchildren; siblings, Madeline Lawson and Alvin (Nellie) Hensley; special great-granddaughter and neighbor, Addison Hepler; and a host of family and friends.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 29, 2025, at McConnell Tabernacle at McConnell, WV, with Pastor Keith McClung officiating.
