Douglas R. "Doug" Ballard, 79, of Logan, WV, formerly of Kodak, TN and Fayetteville, WV, died peacefully at CAMC Memorial Hospital on September 22, 2023, with his three sons by his side.
He was born April 8, 1944, at Smithers, WV, the eldest son of the late William “Willie” and Florence Mae Ballard of Smithers, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Judith “Judy”, who he missed immensely and is finally reunited with; and one brother, Charles Ray.
Doug loved the outdoors and was his happiest when hunting, fishing, camping, walking or just sitting on a swing in the yard enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. He loved his family dearly and was very proud of all three of his boys, spending countless hours at ball fields throughout their childhood watching them and offering his advice. He was an avid Mountaineer fan, always watching or listening to their games to cheer them on. A maintenance man by trade, he enjoyed working on things and figuring out a way to make them work again, instead of buying it new. He was also a master at knife sharpening, which kept everyone in the community with a sharp knife for deer skinning or to carry in their pocket.
He is survived by his three sons, Curtis (Carla) of Lenoir, NC, Terry (Beth) of Logan, WV, and Kent of Logan, who provided exceptional care for him during his extended illness, and his little dog, Ed; four grandchildren, Ashley (Jeremy) Duncan of Lenoir, NC, Derek Ballard of Akron, OH, Samantha Ballard of Morgantown, WV, and Todd Ballard of Madison, WV; three great grandchildren, Sophia Grace, Blake Anthony and Maddison Jade; one brother, Tom (Paula) of Fayetteville, WV and one sister, Ann (Jim) Simms of Hartville, OH; his uncle, Gary Ballard, whom he enjoyed visits from during his hospital stays; his nieces and nephews, especially Jonah (Heather) Simms and Josh (Amanda) Simms, who he spent many days deer hunting and trout fishing with.
His remains have been cremated and will be joined with Judy's to be scattered at a special place by the family. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Evans Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Chapmanville, WV.
