Curtis Lee Conley Obituary

Curtis Lee Conley, 86, of Chapmanville, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 16, 2026, leaving from Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan, WV.

He was born December 22, 1939, at Chapmanville, WV, a son of the late Moscoe and Della Samson Conley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Edmond Conley; three sons-in-law, Jerry Whitman, Clarence Edward Bell, and Thomas Hines; a former son-in-law, Jennings Lee Dingess; 6 brothers, Julius, Carl Edward, Ransom, Kenny, Gallie, and Denver Conley; and 7 sisters, Thelma “Love” Adams, Theora “Sissy” Powers, Pansy “Patty” Ball, Lola Conley, Lottie Farris, Naomi Conley, and Bonnie Sue.

Curtis was a beloved member of his community whose life was marked by hard work, faith, music, and a deep love for the people and places that shaped him. First and foremost, Curtis was a Born-Again Christian whose faith was most important in his life. He lived with conviction and kindness, and he was known for visiting the sick and offering comfort and encouragement to others. He spent 20 years working as a coal miner, a career that reflected his strength, determination, and steadfast commitment to providing for his family. Through years of labor, he earned the respect of those who knew him and built a reputation for being dependable, hardworking, and proud of the life he lived.

Music was one of his greatest joys. He loved singing and was an avid fan of bluegrass music, especially the music of Bill Monroe. Curtis was well known for playing his bass fiddle. He was a familiar face at many political rallies and events within the community where he would bring smiles to everyone through his live performances. He was a devoted member of the Wallace Horn Friendly Neighbor Show for 50 years and also belonged to Pickin’ In The Park. He treasured the fellowship that came with music and enjoyed traveling to bluegrass festivals all across the United States. These gatherings brought him happiness, and he found lasting friendships through the songs, the pickin’ and grinnin’, and the shared love of tradition. Curtis also enjoyed working on old cars and took pride in his knowledge and appreciation of automobiles. He was a professional car collector and had a special eye for vehicles that reflected both craftsmanship and character. He also loved riding his tractor, a pastime that suited his practical nature and his enjoyment of simple, honest work. Whether he was under the hood of a car, out on his tractor, going to church, or listening to music, he found contentment in the things he loved most. Curtis will long be remembered for the life he lived and the many ways he enriched the lives of those around him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 66 years, Judy Conley; his children, Teresa Whitman, Tammy (Jim) Quick, Terri (Tommy) Kitchen, Elizabeth “Liz” (Scotty Joe) Sanders, and Curtis James “Pooh” (Robin) Conley; his grandchildren, Jerry (Ginger) Whitman II, Justin (Ashley) Whitman, Courtney (Derek) DeProspero, John Michael (Heather) Quick, James Donavon (Caitlyn) Quick, Jennings Lee (Peggie) Dingess II, Casey (Montana) Bell, Aiden Trey Hines, Caden Trent Hines, Torie Larae (Noah) Wimer, Jamie Kristin (Thomas) Bryant, and Rachelle Conley (Levi Stollings); 19 great-grandchildren; his brother and best friend, Gillis (Joan) Conley; one sister, Reba Dingess; and 2 special friends, Paul “Dunk” (Emalean) Farris and Gary (Trina) Estepp. Additionally, Curtis leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of other dear family and friends.
