Corrine Holstein Obituary

Corrine Holstein

October 10, 1933 - February 2, 2021

Corrine, born in DeBord, Kentucky to James “Ike” McGinnins and Alifair Cook, died on a beautiful snowy day in her home at Low Gap after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.   She was known by many names; Mom, Mamaw, Grandmother, Grandma, “Clorox”, Sister Corrine, “2%”, “Groonie” and “Ike.”  She was a long-time member of the Powell Creek Church and she regularly made candy, pumpkin rolls and fried pies for the church’s fundraisers.  She was a faithful Christian.  Corrine worked many years at the Big Rock Supermarket in Jeffrey as a butcher and continued her work there when it became “Spruce River Market.”  She was well known in the community and she had an exceptional memory of everyone she met at the Big Rock.  She loved the people of Jeffrey and she worked until she was no longer physically able to.

Corrine was a woman of many talents.   She made both of her daughter’s wedding dresses as well as several dresses for her granddaughters when they were young.  She thoughtfully crocheted a blanket for every grandchild born in the family.  Most notably, she held the title of the best cook in the whole world and taught many people how to cook West Virginia delicacies like chicken and dumplings and pinto beans and cornbread. Later in life, she returned to school to earn her GED.  During this time, she completed several courses in bookkeeping, received her certification in underground mining, and became a phlebotomist after the age of 60.

Corrine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Holstein, her infant son Elmer Dewey, eldest son Gary Clark Holstein, Sr., grandson Gary “Shorty” Holstein Jr., great grandson Gary Holstein III, a beloved son-in-law Richard White, siblings Lucille Wood, Buford McGinnis, Clara Chambers, Sillar Marie Buffington, Lewis Junior McGinnis, Harry Eugene McGinnis, Robert Matthew McGinnis,Virgie Irene McGinnis, Doris McGinnis, and Meredith McGinnis.

She leaves several loving but stubborn and headstrong family members, including children Janet White of Elizabethtown, KY, Allen Holstein (Drema) of Madison, WV, and Cynthia Holstein (Greg Casto) of South Point, Ohio.  Her grandchildren Cassie White (Rick), Margery Cross (Joe), Amy Dudding (Tommy), April Alison (Jason), Natalie Grubb (Chris), Sunshine Holstein, Cheryl Harper (Bill), and Olivia Matney (Drew).  Her siblings James Samuel McGinnis of Indiana, Rufus McGinnis of Missssippi, William David McGinnis of Louisa, KY and Florida, Beulah Spencer of Columbus, OH, Nancy Moore of Louisa, KY and Georgeanna Tucker of Louisa, KY.  Seventeen great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.  Grand-dogs Beary, Maddie, Oscar, and Trixie.  Enough nieces and nephews to populate a small town. Also surviving are several special people in Corrine’s life, Donald and Sherry Kerns, Bobby and Sherry Richmond, Tiffany and Chad Pridemore, Sherry Ball, Marlene Long and Vic and Freddie Tully.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday February 6th at Evans Funeral Home in Chapmanville, WV. Visitation will precede services for friends beginning at 12:30 PM. Interment will follow at Family Memorial Gardens, Low Gap, WV.  Anyone wanting to provide remarks at the service will be welcomed. Masks will be required.  There will be no gathering of friends and family following the burial, instead, the family will plan a celebration of life this spring or summer in her back yard overlooking the Spruce River which supplied her with many fish over the years.
