Billy Ray Chafin Obituary

Billy Ray Chafin, 78, of Logan, WV, departed this life on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by family.

He was born December 23, 1946, at Omar, WV, a son of the late Josh and Eva Mae Curry Chafin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathy Chafin; and his siblings, Glenn Holcomb, Arlene Chafin, Ernest James Chafin, Josh Chafin, Jr., Kenneth “Whiz” Chafin, Betty Day, Doris Maynard, Hogan Chafin, and Charles “Eddie” Chafin.

Billy Ray carried on a legacy of integrity and service. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for 4 years. Upon being honorably discharged from the military, he embarked on a distinguished 21-year career as a state trooper with the West Virginia State Police, where he earned the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and the community he so diligently protected.

Billy Ray's commitment to service extended far beyond his professional life. As a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, he was a treasured member of the Aracoma Lodge #99 A.F. & A.M. in Logan, WV, where he also served as Past Venable Master, Past Personal Rep, Past High Priest, and Past Commander. His fellow Masons revered him for his wisdom and leadership as he guided the lodge with a steady hand and a compassionate heart. He had a passion for coaching and mentoring the incoming members of the Masonic Lodge. He was a beacon of knowledge and encouragement, eager to support the growth and development of new Masons. As a mentor to many members of the WVSP, Billy Ray's influence extended far beyond his years of active service. He was a source of sage advice and steadfast support, helping to shape the next generation of state troopers with the same honor and commitment that defined his own career.

His love for his children and grandchildren knew no bounds, and they revered him as their personal hero. He was the craftsman of the family in more ways than one, not only through his artistic talents in woodworking and furniture refinishing but also in shaping the lives of those he held dear. Billy Ray's life was one of purpose, love, and service. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories told, the lessons shared, and the impact he had on the many lives he touched. He was a man of great character, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Billy Ray is survived by his children, Treche Smiler and Virginia “Ginni” Chafin both of Southport, FL, Billy Ray Ellis of Cullman, AL, and Jessica Merritt of Charleston, WV; his grandchildren, Kasey Franks, Logan Franks, Terry Crawford, Emilee Hodge, Joseph Hodge, Drake Dunn, Allison Dunn, Emily Dunn, and Chloe Dunn; 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Morgan and Lila Maynard both of Logan, WV; and one dear niece, Beverly Holcomb.
