Billy Joe Harless, 74, of Chapmanville, WV, passed away on March 10, 2025. He was born December 16, 1950, in West Hamlin, WV. Billy was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, John Virgil Harless and Shirley Johnson, a stepfather, Mattie Johnson and a stepbrother, Dana Johnson.
After graduating from Chapmanville High School, Billy proudly served in the United States Army. After his military service, he dedicated 37 years of his life to the coal mining industry, a job that he took great pride in throughout his life. Billy was a Baptist and member of Garrett Chapel and a Master Mason of the Aracoma Lodge #99 A.F. & A.M. in Logan, WV.
Family was the most important thing to Billy. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and Pop-Pop, finding immense pride in his family and their accomplishments. His family will remember him for his warm sense of humor, and he had a laugh that could fill the room. Anyone who knew Billy would tell you he was a giving person and enjoyed helping others. Billy had many interests. He was an avid gun collector and skilled woodworker. He also enjoyed golfing, gardening and traveling.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Peachie Harless, who was always by his side. Together they nurtured a close-knit family, raising two children, Jill (Kevin) Bryant of Chapmanville, WV and Jody (Jessica) Harless of Charleston, WV. Billy had three grandchildren, Emma Bryant and Brody and Baylee Harless who were his pride and joy. He always enjoyed being able to spend time with them and attend their sporting events and school programs. Billy lived a full and meaningful life, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family would like to thank the VA Medical Center and staff for their support with his healthcare needs and a special thank you to his caregivers and nurses for all the kindness, love and care they provided.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. with a family memorial service to follow at Evans Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Chapmanville, WV.
Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill, WV, where Masonic Graveside Rites will be observed.
