Bertha Marie Wilson Obituary

 

Bertha Marie Wilson, 91, of Charleston, WV, formerly of Chapmanville, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 1, 2023, leaving from Teays Valley Center at Hurricane, WV.


She was born April 4, 1932, at Steubenville, OH, a daughter of the late Leander and Lidella Virginia Haun Eloi.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos C. Wilson; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Lidella Spence; one son-in-law, Mark Hrutkay; and three brothers, Leonard Eloi, Nelson Eloi, and Richard Eloi.


Bertha was a well-renowned schoolteacher for many years. She earned her Master’s Degree in education and touched the lives of many students throughout her teaching career. Aside from teaching, she was also well-known for the many hats she wore throughout Logan County. She was a devout Christian and she attended the First Baptist Church of McConnell whenever she was able. Bertha was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and the Red Hat Society. She also served as a girl scout leader and she helped with band boosters and boy scouts as well. Bertha was a semi-professional clown in local parades which she enjoyed. She also loved bowling and was a junior bowlers coach and was also a member of the Women’s Bowling Conference and the 500 Club.


Bertha also loved the outdoors, gardening, hunting, and fishing. An avid sports fan, she especially loved the West Virginia Mountaineers. She was also very fond of her dogs and was a proud registered Democrat.


Bertha is survived by four children, Lidella Marie Wilson Hrutkay and Amos C. Wilson, II, both of Charleston, WV, Leander John Wilson of Chapmanville, WV, and Joanna Lee Wilson Spence and her husband, Thomas of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Gregory James Hrutkay of Chapmanville, WV, and Johnathan Thomas Spence of Gainesville, FL; and two sisters, Virginia Miller of Columbus, OH, and Shirley Huber of Wintersville, OH. Additionally, Bertha leaves behind many nieces and nephews along with a host of extended family and friends.


A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel at Chapmanville, WV, with Rev. John E. Godby officiating.


Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2023, at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel at Chapmanville, WV.


Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Evans Funeral Home & Cremation Services at Chapmanville, WV.
